Digital TV and DVD may mean that video recorders are an endangered species. Now the Cambridge research company Scientific Generics has come up with another reason to ditch your trusty VCR.

It has invented a "home server" that uses a hard disk instead of tape to record television programmes. The smart system can also scan the airwaves for programmes you might like and then ask if you want to record them. Scientific Generics is now looking for partners.
