<<What about disappointing earnings and no split -- now THAT would be a double whammy! >>

One thing makes a stock great, and allows for huge multiples is when a company never surprises to the downside.

That's why Hewlett Packard and 3Com and Motorola are comparatively dogs. They come in below.

Microsoft never disappoints, and if you were paying attention when MSFT announced earnings last quarter, they upped estimates a nickel for this quarter. I'm not worried about whether they announce a split or not, I think relief from extraneous events will be enough to propel this stock. But if they do announce a split, it will be like owning a money printing press.

P.S. If Microsoft ever does come in below, I will watch with the same stunned look that I had when I witnessed Buster Douglass K.O. Mike Tyson.

Maffei told the analysts after the last earnings report to raise their estimates. Very unusual, they tend to be so conservative. So, I would bet that an earnings disappointment from Microsoft is about as likely as Slick Willie and Monica appearing together on Love Connection!
