larry, price projection below (18 mos out...lets give it 18 days<G>) CMGI Shares Rise on Stock Split, Venture-Capital Fund Andover, Massachusetts, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- CMG Information Services Inc. shares jumped as much as 27 percent after the Internet venture-capital company said it will split its stock 2-for-1 and said it closed its third venture fund. CMG shares rose 14 1/2 to 95 in late trading of 4.2 million, more than double the three-month daily average. Earlier, the shares traded as high as 102. CMG invests in closely held Internet companies with the goal of taking the companies public or selling them to other investors. It said its third investment fund closed with $272 million in capital. Investors include Microsoft Corp., Sumitomo Corp. and Vulcan Ventures, the investment company founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. ''The earlier expectation was that the fund was going to be $100 million to $150 million, but there was so much demand they kept it open,'' said First Albany analyst Ullas Naik, who has a ''buy'' rating on the company and said the stock could go to $150 to $200 in the next 18 months, on a pre-split basis. ''That they can get Microsoft, Vulcan Ventures and all those folks is a testament to credibility of CMGI.'' Other Internet stocks, from No. 1 online service Amazon.com Inc. to Internet service provider MindSpring Enterprises Inc., have soared this year after splitting stock. CMG will issue one new stock certificate on Jan. 11 for each share held as of Dec. 28. CMG, based in Andover, Massachusetts, made $19.1 million from the sale of PlanetAll, an Internet service that keeps track of people and appointments, to Amazon.com Inc., the company said Tuesday. It said also it made $23.2 million from selling Reel.com to Hollywood Entertainment Corp. ''They have roughly 30 companies as part of their network'' of investments, said Naik. ''They've done a phenomenal job of cross-pollinating'' those companies. For instance, GeoCities, which lets people set up free Web sites, signed an agreement last month to license animated graphics technology from another CMGI company named Parable. ''Good quality companies want to be part of (CMGI's) network so they can benefit from that cross-pollination,'' Naik said. 15:32:24 12/17/1998 good luck, rhonda
