democratic contenders in Texas who are electable in 2000? Are you kidding? This is the land of Phil Grahm and George Bush JR. So far Austin is an oasis of tolerance in a vast desert. Lately the extreme right wing has been a campaign of stealth. This is evident on local races and school board type of elections. The well funded campaigns feature a previously unknown entrant who professes to be undecided on most issues except one or two popular ones. They lie low until reaching a majority on the board or council (staggered elections) and then suddenly pass all kinds of extreme measures, fire any staff and replace them with cronies. They get kicked out next election but in the meantime they are very disruptive. TP
