The ping trick does not always work, however. I have seen bottlenecks in the network caused by Sprint, or ATT, or UUNET, or whoever your ISP is connected to. For example, a couple of weeks ago I was getting totally lagged data from Interquote when I logged on through my regular ISP. If I did a traceroute (similar to ping but more detailed and informative), I found that the packets were getting stalled in the Chicago area with one of the local routers on, as I recall, the Sprint backbone. That was the way my ISP was set up to route their packets to Chicago. My ISP was fine, but the backbone they were tied into had problems. If I logged in through IBM.NET, my alternet ISP, I had no problems, but that is because they, apparently, have their own private backbone that includes the Chicago area. BTW, for people who need reliable internet, and worldwide connectivity, IBM.NET, soon to be ATT.NET from what I've heard, is excellent, but, they only allow 100 hours per month before they start raping you in fees.) I use them as a backup when there are network problems, or when I am traveling.

If anyone is having a serious problem with e-mail, pm me, and I will (as long as it does not get out of hand) try to help you locate the bottleneck.
