FCC 'Rezones' Part Of Radio Spectrum To Encourage Wireless

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The Federal Communications Commission Thursday agreed to effectively "rezone" a portion of the radio spectrum to encourage development of wireless services.

The changes, approved unanimously by the FCC, should expedite deployment of wireless telecommunications services as an alternative to conventional wire line services, as well as for video, data and connections between computer networks, said Regina Keeney, head of the FCC's International Bureau.

The move is expected to help firms providing satellite services, such as Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), as well as alternative telecommunications providers like WinStar Communications Inc. (WCII), which provides wireless Internet services. - Mark Wigfield; 202-828-3397
