Off Topic: Livingston admits to marital indiscretions

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, December 17) -- In a
surprise revelation that could affect the dynamics of
Friday's House impeachment debate, Republican
House Speaker-elect Bob Livingston says he has
disclosed to his Republican colleagues that he has
had sexual affairs in his past.

Livngston told the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call,
"When I did an early interview with the media after
announcing my candidacy for speaker, I told a
reporter that I was running for speaker, not
sainthood. There was a good reason for those
words.

"I have decided to inform my colleagues and
constituents that during my 33-year marriage to my
wife, Bonnie, I have on occasion strayed from my
marriage and doing so nearly cost me my marriage
and my family," he told Roll Call.

In a pointed reference to President Bill Clinton's
sex-and-perjury case pending before the House,
Livingston told the newspaper his indiscretions "were
not with employees on my staff and I have never
been asked to testify under oath about them."

A Livingston staff member said Livingston has no
plans to resign as speaker-elect. In a statement
released Thursday night, Livingston called the
indiscretions a small but painful part of his past, and
said he sought counseling and forgiveness from his
family.

The interview that Livingston mentioned was with
CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Asked by Blitzer about his
background, he described his family and said he was
"just a regular person."
