Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW)(Reuters 03:37 PM ET 12/17/98)
(http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2557655266-456)

Worldwide server market revenues fell 3% in the 3Q as the industry faced pricing pressure but shipments remained robust, increasing 15%, an industry report said Thursday. SUN MICROSYSTEMS continued to move past competitors and increase market share while DELL COMPUTER saw strong revenues growth. IBM ranked first in revenues, followed by HEWLETT-PACKARD, their revenues growing at 20% and 17% year over year, respectively. COMPAQ COMPUTER came in third after a bad quarter for the company's server business, the report said. Sun Microsystems landed in the No. 4 spot for server vendors when measured by revenue. Japanese server vendors such as Fujitsu Ltd, NEC CORP and HITACHI all posted steep double digit declines in server revenues.

=====================================================================

I would like to see those revenues increase. I wonder if the survey included other customer sales and services (ie. consulting services, storage products, software applications etc.). Perhaps if this basis is used, SUNW total "invoiced" revenues exceed the other vendors.

eks, i would not settle for 30% premium. heck, we could get that in no time any way. Here is a thought. Sunw is actually several different companies. Server, Software and Microprocessor and network.

IBM is sitting on 5 B cash from T. Also i heard ibm is moving towards solaris instead of their own OS. IBM needs to come up w. better earning ( buying back their own stock does not work 4 ever).
MARIMBA uses IBM as their sales channel. So IBM maybe intrested in maybe 25% of the sunw.
breaking up the company's business units could add up to small change ...right ?

25% here and 25% there could add up to real mony. unless some one is talking real mony, Scott's ego can not be for sale.

Dear Eric: I too am a reasonably long term SUNW shareholder. I have no problem with any of the scenarios presented but I just dont think its gonna happen. Take SUNW and ORCL--can you imagin those two CEO's sharing power? Even less one working for the other?? As to LUCENT, Love the company but its selling at a massive PE ratio, if we didnt get ONE HELL OF A PREMIUM I think we might likely be sorry shareholder value wise. This is the 90's soon to be the new Millenium. I guess Sleeping Around is OK socially?? President does it!! JDN
