Is there a wash sale rule on gains? I mean, if I have substantial actual losses over the year, but am limited to $3,000 per year, can I sell a stock that has paper gains on Dec 31, lessen my actual yearly losses (but still over $3,000), and rebuy it Jan 2 at a new, higher, cost basis?
