You are overlooking one thing -- the abortion issue. Bush, or anybody else, has to walk over to the extreme right to first win the primaries, and then, run all the way to the center to try and win the Presidential elections. Not exactly the best way of convincing the public that he stands for something and will stick to it, no matter what.

However I do not think there will be an extended Senate trial, either Censure or resignation.

Senate Majority Leader Lott has stated that there will be a full trial. Clinton has emphatically denied that he will resign. Who will back down? Who is there left in DC who is not bitterly partisan and polarized?

This thing is going to drag out, IMO.
