Frank, this is fascinating. Not being familiar with undersea operations, or fiber optics, I have a basic question about power losses over such distances. Are fiber losses small enough that a light beam can be transmitted thousands of miles from one coast to another? The article you referenced hints at repeaters not being necessary. Also, if repeaters are used, how are they powered, and do they have to be serviced? TIA.
