Well, is is Daniele Laliberte's HyperNews and it has been modified. It is a whole bunch of Perl scripts. I tried to get one webadmin to install it under NCSA httpd and he could not get it right. There are a mountain of problems with installation. But it is slick when you get it working.

PERL is not a good programming language. It does not matter what a programming language does. It matters that it is readable. Languages are made for people to read and change not machines. Their compilation can be any paradigm. What is needed is a language of simple syntax like basic that does what PERL does. To that end BASIC is probably better if it were surgeried to perform better in a UNIX system. The magic of PERL is that it really calls Apache and the OS and is a script for that. Its routines could be vastly improved in syntax I think and its structure made better.
