" Intel May Move Up 400 MHz Celeron Introduction Date to Jan. 4"

Wow! Competition heats up.......

If true,.......

It may do serious damage to intel Pentium II line. Corporate will switch to Celeron. Half of Q4 celeron (8 million total estimate) is already going to corporate market. Q1-99 GM will stagnate (may not decline due to super aggressive cost cutting in-place)

AMD's ASP will be under pressure & Cyrix will disappear.

Anyway, we consumers will be winners.

Paul,

This explains why AMD's stock has been under pressure recently.

Can the 450 Mhz Celeron be far behind?

Looks like they will let PII die gracefully away before end of Q1 and have Katmai at high end.

We'll see if AMD can respond.

Intel Investors - Streaming SIMD Extensions - One report has this monicker as the Marketing Designation for the KNI - Katmai New Instructions.

I wouldn't take this as gospel, just yet !

February, 1999 is still mentioned as an introductory date.

Katmai NI a dead pigeon

In a burst of pre-launch publicity, chip giant Intel has renamed its Katmai New Instructions set to the far sexier "Streaming SIMD Extensions".

But the company is at pains to point out that the new name is not a trademark, will not be abbreviated to SSE and will not be used in advertising material.

According to Intel, Katmai was an internal codename for both SSE (oops) and for the desktop CPU which will be introduced late February.

The official name for the chip will be announced early January and the slot two chip which includes SSE (oops, again), codenamed Tanner, along with the 0.18 micron die shrink of Katmai and Tanner, that is Coppermine and Cascades, will all share the same branding.

Clear on that? ®

Paul, Celeron 400 in early Jan. will be a serious blow to AMD's ASPs. I've still got my shares I bought at $14. If true, will this news make you sell???
