A great deal more- for starters there were other passengers in the car who were NOT injured. Mr. Kent did not respond to instructions, he remained belligerent, and the police officers had been trained to subdue belligerent suspects with the baton. Because he seemed to be under the influence of drugs (pcp was suspected- due to his actions and strength) the officers felt use of the batons was justified- unfortunately the officer applying the baton was unskilled and the supervising officer did not intervene. It was an error of judgment but hardly criminal or racist. A drunk white man in Santa Cruz was subdued in exactly the same way as Rodney King shortly after the Rodney King melodrama but it received very little air play.
