The best beginners book I have read is N. Barkakati's "Linux Secrets. " Unfortunately for yourself it is Slackware oriented. I would not recommend "Linux Undercover" with its RedHat slant as it is a poorly indexed compendium of articles although seemingly exhaustive. There are some other RedHat Books that may be better. If the "Linux Bible" from Yggdrasil was more up to date I would suggest it. It does have a lot of good Unix stuff in general but is out of date for your purposes.

These people have some good tips pages and walkthroughs.
