Brooktrout buys Lucent's Telephony unit

Network World:
Lucent has sold its Computer Telephony
Products division to communications firm
Brooktrout Technology for $29.4 million in
cash, the companies said today.

The deal could help accelerate the
development of technology standards needed
to help the nascent computer telephony
market grow, officials at both companies
said.

Lucent's CTP unit develops hardware and
software products that link PCs with local
area networks and telephone networks, as
well as other technologies for the voice
processing industry.

By itself CTP isn't big enough to establish the
standards needed to help the market grow,
Lucent spokeswoman Mary Ward said.

Brooktrout generated $98 million in revenue
in fiscal 1998, compared with CTP's $30
million. The acquisition will give Brooktrout
the critical mass it needs to drive growth and
direction in the telephony market, said
Kenneth Lavine, former president of CTP,
who joins Brooktrout as a division president.

The deal also helps Brooktrout's strategy to
develop products that carry voice and data
traffic over a single network.

Based in Los Gatos, Calif., Lucent's CTP
division employs approximately 100 workers
and will become a wholly owned subsidiary of
Brooktrout, in Needham, Mass. CTP's
products are sold mostly through telephone
switch manufacturers, computer telephony
value added resellers and developers, and
distributors.
