>>AS AMAZON TURNS: It was the battle of the Internet analysts Thursday over Amazon.com's highflying stock. Merrill Lynch analyst Jonathan Cohen took a swipe at CIBC Oppenheimer analyst Henry Blodget, telling clients that the online retailer's shares should trade at about 50 each over the next 12 to 18 months. The comments were a challenge to Mr. Blodget, who had raised his 12-month price target to 400 from 150 Wednesday, sparking a 46 1/4, or 19%, rise to 289.

Thursday, Amazon fell 12 1/4, or 4.2%, to 276 3/4. "It's like a street brawl," said Jeff Matthews of RAM Partners.

Mr. Cohen says Amazon is ultimately a retailer in the low-margin business of selling books and is up against intense competition as established off-line players like Barnes & Noble expand on the Web.<<
