Intel Jumps On Analysts' Upbeat View Of Fourth Quarter

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of chip giant Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) jumped Friday after two Wall Street analysts raised earnings estimates, on expectations for a better-than-expected fourth quarter because of strong PC demand.

Both Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Prudential Securities raised estimates on the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, because of solid PC demand and rising gross profit margins with a better product mix.

''Similar to the actual third quarter results, we believe Intel will provide a further upside surprise when the company reports its fourth-quarter results,'' said Mark Edelstone, a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst, in a note to clients.

Edelstone raised 1998 earnings estimates on Intel to $3.48 a share, up from $3.45 previously. He also raised 1999 earnings estimates to $4.60 from $4.40 a share previously. Edelstone said that a combination of solid demand and low inventories will also help the company see less-than-average seasonal weakness in the first quarter of 1999.

Intel shares were up $3.25 to $120.125 in active trading. Edelstone also reiterated his $150 a share price target.

Prudential Securities analyst Hans Mosesmann raised his fourth quarter earnings to $1.10 from $1.04 and highlighted the potential for better gross profit margins from an improved product mix of higher-margin processors.

Separately, Intel is expected to introduce the fastest version of its Celeron processor on January 4, with a 400 megahertz version of the chip, which is used in lower-cost PCs.

According to Computer Retail Week, an industry trade publication, Intel accelerated the launch of the 400 megahertz chip by several months and now the launch of the chip will take place on January 4, at the same time the company launches the 366 megahertz Celeron. Intel had planned to launch the 400 megahertz chip as late as April, the publication reported on its Web site, www.crw.com.

Intel officials were not immediately available to comment on the report. But recently, Intel said it will host a product launch in San Francisco on January 4.
