X - (here I go again) yes - but don't tell me for a moment that Hyde and Livingstone fessed up because they wanted to purge their souls in public - they did so in Hyde's case because it was becoming public anyway and in L's case because he knew it would and didn't want it to come out after he's finished the dirty business on hand. The trouble with this sorry mess is that political views force one to defend the indefensible on both sides of this issue. Clinton is the author of his own misfortune - but we have a cesspool in Washington - the raid on Iraq must rank as one of the most cynical events in recent history - you can question the timing - but all sides have been wanting to have a go - but we have a classic set-up in place with well rehearsed justifications - 'threats to neighbouring states',' weapons of mass destruction', etc., etc. . The extraordinary thing is that the inspectors are also no doubt spotters of targets for bombing attacks too. How much CIA infiltration is present among the inspectors one wonders? At the back of all of this is the need to control the flow of oil - vital interests of the US and UK - also the need ot keep the region in check somehow. I watched the UK Amabassador to the UN on Charlie Rose last night - Charlie should have pressed him further on the flimsy pretexts - I thought the man was decidedly shaky. In fact I think that in this region of the world we are back to an era of thinly disguised naked imperialism. Noam Chomsky where are you? E
