In the December 1996 issue of Wired Magazine, available online at wired.com there was a somewhat long article on the laying of a 'round the world' fiber cable. When I read it I found it quite interesting, those who frequent this thread may as well.

Frank... it seems in some cases that the cost of water based fiber may be less per mile for long distances than land based fiber. Take a NYCity to Miami run.. if run down the coast, no rights of ways need to be obtained and paid for, but some ocean trenching may be needed close on shore depending on how far out the cable is laid... what is your take?
