Yeah- the guy makes an attempt at making sense - but it is a slanted article....he says..

"The network of superstores isn't going to serve as a big enough platform to draw traffic to booksamillion.com. It hasn't worked out for the much larger Borders (NYSE:BGP - news) , and it's going to be even harder for this smaller fellow latecomer."

Oh please - give me a break. Any company has any number of bizzilions
of partnership opportunities on the Net - whenever they enter.
Partnerships can be made all the time. Just takes a few whiz kids
to create all sorts of win/win partnership ideas & strategic banner placements etc. at any time....
It's just a matter of throwing talented people at Net marketing.
Just the free PR value of being linked to, all over the place recently is great at any rate!

Then he says:

"The book club is an interesting attempt at creating a niche, but even if it shaves a few pennies off Amazon.com's discounted prices, will the $5 annual fee prove to be more a nuisance hurdle than an attempt to create a feeling of exclusivity on the cheap?"

A few pennies? The last time I looked - each book I looked at (as a
club member - which I am..) was 5 bucks cheaper or more than Amazon.
I didn't consider the 5 buck fee a nuisance. Was much better than the 35 bucks a year I pay at Sams Club & I didn't have to stand in line :-)

I could go on - but you get the pic. He's right about one thing..
it goes up and down and up and down. But there is one thing I know for sure....it will get better and better and better....

"Through our Web site, we hope to extend this franchise to a broader audience,'' Books-A-Million Chief Executive Clyde
Anderson said in a statement, referring to the Internet's national or even global reach. ''We believe we can bring the diversity and excitement of our retail stores to the Internet, and we will be continuing to add new products and features in the months ahead,'' Anderson said.

When that happens - this baby will skyrocket again...
The key is to be predictive.. :-)
