When you look at your trading screen (mine is E-Trade), it shows the bid and ask figures. A volume figure is next to each. The volume figure I always see is 5,000 shares (for ARET). That means they will trade at least 5,000 shares. It does not mean anything else.

So, if you have an order in for 100,000 shares, they usually trade the 5,000 and the balance may trade next within seconds or minutes for 95,000 or broken up into different size volumes.

Go look at some other higher valued stock such as MSFT to make a comparison.

Roger

Several brokers take 1 cent per share for trading over 5000 shares, that is the reason. At the same time some of them have one price for trading the same equity several times the same day.

So in stead of trading 50K the users of those brokers have to trade 10 times 5K.
