The IRIDIUM dual mode phone by Motorola will work on incompatible cellular protocols. To do so, one inserts either the CDMA/AMPS/NAMPS cassette or the GSM cassette into the phone (it does not enlarge the phone). If you're in the U.S., insert the CDMA cassette; Europe - GSM. The cassettes are an additional cost to the basic satellite phone, but allow you to communicate virtually anywhere, on any system.
I don't know how the Globalstar phone will perform these same functions, since I have not seen one; I suspect their prototype is different from the eventual production model anyway.
