Text of Hillary Clinton Comments

By The Associated Press
Friday, December 18, 1998; 11:30 a.m. EST

Text of first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's exchange with reporters at the White House South Portico Friday, following a presentation on Mothers Against Drunk Driving ''red ribbon'' campaign against drunk driving:

Q: Mrs. Clinton is there anything that you'd like to say about the debate going on on Capitol Hill today? You've been at work behind the scenes calling members. What would you like to say today?

MRS. CLINTON: Well, I think the vast majority of Americans share my approval and pride in the job that the president's been doing for our country. And I think that the view is shared not only by the vast majority of Americans, but by people all over the world, as I saw recently on the trip to the Middle East.

And I think in this holiday season, as we celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah and Ramadan -- and at the time for reflection and reconciliation among people -- we in our country ought to practice reconciliation and we ought to bring our country together. We ought to end divisiveness because we can do so much more together.

And, in these times of great economic blessings that we're enjoying in our country, there are still people who need help and need support. There are still, you know, abused and neglected and foster children that are not getting well taken care of. There are still people with health care problems who need tending to. There are older people who are, you know, just barely making ends meet on their Social Security and their pensions. And there are issues in education and environment.

There are so many important issues for us to address. I would hope that we as a nation would turn our attention to what we can do together, what we can do positively, how we can build each other up. So I hope that this holiday season is a very happy and blessed one for everyone. Thank you all very much.

>>> Gee, I thought the analogy was to be on conducting military actions outside the law. Keep moving the target.

Keep moving the target? This stated out as an excuse. Yours. When i challedged that you turned it into an analogy, without explaining what the analogy was supposed to be. When I object to that, you object to my objection.
