Sprint wins part of $5 bln U.S. contract
WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Sprint Corp. <FON.N> won the
first of two spots on an estimated $5 billion contract to
provide long-distance service to U.S. government agencies over
eight years, the General Services Administration said on
Friday.
The second place on the contract, which Kansas City,
Mo.-based Sprint is still eligible for, will be awarded in
January, the GSA said.

Alltel agrees to buy Aliant for $1.5 billion

NEW YORK, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Rural telephone company Alltel
Corp. <AT.N> said on Friday it would buy Aliant Communications
Inc. <ALNT.O>, which provides phone, paging and Internet
services in Nebraska, for $1.5 billion in stock.
The combined company would have $5.3 billion in annual
revenues and serve 6.3 million customers in 24 states. The deal
is expected to boost Alltel's earnings.
Under terms of the agreement, each share of Aliant will be
exchanged for $39.13 worth of Alltel stock, a 26.7 percent
premium over Aliant's closing stock price on Thursday.
Shares of Aliant jumped nearly 16 percent or $5.06 to
$35.75 on Nasdaq. Shares of Alltel fell $1.56 to $55.44 on the
New York Stock Exchange.
