Just a guess, but I would say that it was related to options expiration,
this being a triple witching Friday, however one really never knows.
BTW, I am a newby to AFCI, I started a position today. There has
been some talk about the Sprint news, and in my opinion, I would
think that AFCI has a nice piece of business out of this. If you
follow the press releases then you will see what I mean. On 10/09/98
AFCI released that their next generation DLC, or the UMC 1000, had
been standardized at Sprint for ( HIGHER DENSITY) line size apps.
This was tied in with a 2 1/2 year national distribution contract for
local exchange networks. Now then when they released last quarter's
numbers, there was a brief about (Domestic local exchange) business
looking up. So now you have Sprint announcing that they will deploy
a local broadband, integrated (ON-DEMAND) network. I may be
wrong but I read a nice piece of business into this for AFCI, not to
mention the fact that they are also involved with Source-net for a
new (ON DEMAND) network. I believe their future looks pretty good.
Now if Asia comes back on line next year, things will definitely look
up.

Best to all

Henry

Sprint Statement on FTS2001 Contract Win

PR Newswire - December 18, 1998 15:59

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, Dec. 18, the U.S. General Services Administration selected Sprint to provide long-distance telephone service to Federal government agencies in the first of two possible awards in the multi-billion dollar FTS2001 competition. Under the entire FTS2001 contract, the value of government business is estimated to be more than $5 billion over eight years. Each vendor is guaranteed at least $750 million over the life of the contract. Sprint has provided long distance service to the federal government under the precursor FTS2000 contract for the past 10 years.

The following statement from Sprint on the award should be attributed to Don Teague, Vice President and General Manager of the Sprint Government Systems Division in Herndon, Va.:

"We are extremely happy and proud to have been selected by the GSA to continue bringing industry-leading voice and data products and services to the federal government. We see the award of this contract as an endorsement of Sprint's performance and reliability in bringing advanced voice and data communications products and services to the government for the past ten years through the previous FTS2000 contract. We believe this award is a validation of Sprint's business plan and long term technological vision, which includes Sprint ION, Sprint PCS and Global One.

"This award means that existing Sprint FTS2000 customers will have the opportunity to make a seamless transition to FTS2001 service at their own pace, and will now have access to even greater range of telecommunications solutions to allow more efficient government operations at an even lower cost. Sprint is ready to move out quickly to permit as many government agencies as possible to take advantage of the Sprint solutions and international and domestic, wireless and wireline, local and long distance voice, data and video services all 'packaged' to achieve mission success now.

"Financially, this contract will attract many new revenue sources for Sprint, but the full potential is unknown because of the new contract stipulations. While Sprint is guaranteed $750 million over the life of the contract, we will no longer be hampered by the assignment of specific agencies to a specific vendor. We will have the opportunity to offer all -- not just some -- participating government agencies
our products and services, and we believe many more agencies will want to contract with Sprint. We will participate in the competition for the second portion of this award, which is expected to be announced in several weeks."
