The key to whether YAHOO! and Amazon prosper is whether they can provide services and prices that are superior to their competitors' services and prices, the extent to which they get market share, and the degree to which barriers to entry appear in their domains. I can remember when everyone said Microsoft was a flash in the pan because, "anyone can write software." Maybe so, but Microsoft puts their profits back into the business and continually improves their products. Barriers to entry become much greater as an industry matures. There will always be competition on the Internet, but some Internet companies are making much larger investments in understanding customer needs and developing interfaces and services than others. It won't be too long before would-be competitors face investments of hundreds of millions and years of uncertainty to try to catch up to companies that can spend billions and have hundreds of experts supporting them. That is the real long shot! Check out Amazon and YAHOO! and their competitors' sites. The differences are already beginning to become significant. And don't overlook Microsoft. I believe they are only surpassed in site visits by AOL and YAHOO!
