NW,

I thought about calling an old broker friend to see if he has an opinion on CPQ. I may do that next week!

Morgan Stanley lifted its 12-month price target on
Compaq Computer (CPQ) to $55 from $40 a share.
Morgan analyst Gillian Munson said the computer
maker is moving "solidly ahead" with the Digital
acquisition and in its core business. Compaq said the
Digital PC released three weeks ago hasn't had any
serious problems reported as yet. In a research note, Munson highlighted
several near-term and long-term hurdles for the computer maker and said
that although the overall PC industry has suffered, Compaq continues to try
to keep ahead of the game. She said Compaq appears to have worked
through the inventory buildup of late 1997 and early 1998. Although
Compaq is still trying to catch up to demand, Munson said the situation
would probably not be resolved until the company's first quarter, but sees a
lot of upside potential. Compaq will report fourth-quarter earnings and plans
to host an analysts meeting during the week of Jan. 25. Munson said she
suspects that both events will be positive. Shares of Compaq rose 2 9/16 to
42 5/8.
