Skeeter:
I started doing serious cross country with 50 hours in my log. Used to fly to Dallas on a Friday night (after teaching all day) to spend the weekend on some crazy tech projects (Dallas used to be the absolute center of the semi universe,...shows how old I am). Then fly back home again on Sunday night to be back in classes on Monday morning. 7-8 hours hours each way, but at 9 U.S. gallons per hour, 150 knots on the airspeed, the most gorgeous landscape streaming by beneath me and the old Lycoming purring up front, I had adventures and sights that will remain clear when I'm 100. (g)
Have always done much of my own maintenance, both to keep the expenses reasonable and because I'm a tech freak and love "messing" with mechanical/electronic stuff. Next to my wife and kids, the plane is a close second on the "love list". Incidentally, they can be, but don't need to be an expensive situation (the plane that is). They don't depreciate and the good types are not maintenance hogs. Also, the homebuilts have changed the world,....they now provide the real performance. Go to Oshkosh in Late July and you'll never be the same. (g)

Now as for the tax advantages, (heh, heh, heh), it sure doesn't hurt to have a vocation that requires a bunch of travel (g)

Best, Earlie
