No. That sounds like that cheeezy Disney movie from waaay back. Black Hole.
Neutron Star is a collection of short stories set about eight hundred years into the future. The anti-hero of these stories is Beowulf Schaeffer, an unemployed cruise ship pilot who, by way of avarice and deceptively easy opportunity gets into and out of some real bellylaughers. And the sci-fi backdrop is the stuff of legend.
Pierson's Puppeteers are the principal alien species - much more advanced and polite than us monkey-boys, but they have a ...weakness. One which makes humans rather useful. Oh, and puppeteers are rich.

I hope you're intrigued ... it remains a favorite work of literature.

Sounds like Timothy Leary and a tab of Purple Owsley to me.
