No loads typically may take a management fee of approximately 1/4 of 1%. For those who are heavy in no load funds, i.e. retires, by not taking more than 5% in any one stocks keeps the volatility down in the fund. A good fund over the past 3-4 years would be the S&P 500 index fund. Three year compounded to about 120+%. People in Mutual Funds are usually looking for less volatility. Now loaded funds, now that's another thing. In some funds it might cost a person as much as 5% going in and 5% going out, or combinations of that in or out.
