C-Cube should post $10M to $12M in DVD decoder chip sales this Q. They have under a 20% share of the player market, and over 30% of the DVD-PC hardware decode market.

All that starts to change in the Summer of 1999, when DVD becomes recordable.

DVD chips are not alike. An OEM must choose one, and build on it. You can't just replace a DVD chip with a chip made by another manufacturer, they all have integrated different features. To change chips, a board needs to be redesigned.

ZhongxinW.,

CUBE's link to CES doesn't say very much. I cut these few words out......

Digital video is everywhere at CES.
But where can you see solutions for:

Recordable digital video for PC and consumer applications
DVD and Chaoji VCD players with superior audio
capabilities

Advanced digital set-tops with Internet capability
Home and mobile digital video playback

C-Cube Microsystems is developing next-generation ZiVa DVD decoder that it expects
to offer in volume by 1999. Chip has greater integration of functions and adds 3-D
audio capability, company said in declining to release specs
.

New ZiVa decoder would replace existing IC currently priced under $20 in volumes of
50,000 or more per month, Senior Mktg. Dir. Patrick Henry said. Aiwa and Samsung
are among those building chip into DVD players. New ZiVa will contain Spatializer
Audio Labs' N-2-2 multichannel audio algorithm that allows users to get surround sound
from 2 speakers. Pricing on new ZiVa DVD chips, expected to begin production in fall,
hasn't been set, company said.

CUBE has publicized a lot of its work the past months, but this chip which may have been put in production months ago-Not much. We have been reduced to looking for DVD that has Spatializer sound. CUBE's message makes it clear that the thing is done. We'd like to know more though. If anyone is going make sure to make an appointment.
