Well, I'm no XML expert, but XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is simply a much more powerful form of HTML that is currently the document description language of the web. XML allows you to represent arbitrary data structures in a way that is self descibing and portable.

It can be used for all sorts of purposes. It doesn't really have anything to do with how browsers search databases, since browsers don't actually search databases. There are programs that are running on the web server that search the database using whatever protocol the builder of the database decides to use. I suppose that a Java applet could be loaded into the browser which would then call the server to search the database, but that's still not a direct search by the browser.
