Actually, it's reasonably clear that Livingston resigned because he couldn't be assured of the support of conservative Republicans. In the next Congress, only six Republicans have to go against the party line in order to mess up the GOP leadership's plans. With all of the Southern ultra-conservatives answering to the religious right, it's not surprising that a backlash against Livingston occurred. He would not have won the Speakership.

What's sad to me is that Livingston didn't have the guts to stand in and fight for the Speakership. Even worse is that he has decided to resign from the House outright. How would you feel if you were one of his constituents? Or a campaign volunteer? Or a staffer? When representatives of a constituency decide to step down from office, they let that constituency down.

Livingston and Gingrich are both being hailed as heroes for stepping down from office. But this mystifies me. They've quit on the very supporters who put them in office. That's an abdication of duty and jeopardizes the core notion of representative government. Far from being heroes, they're just revealing themselves to be quitters who didn't even have the courage to remain in office and represent their constituents.

This is a terrible day for America.
