V2 owners wont upgrade for Diablo, and if a d3d patch comes out, TNT, Savage, and who knows, maybe even i740 and riva 128 folks may not need to upgrade...Boy, I sure hope it is Glide only..

I agree, which is why most of the FPS enthusiasts already have some sort of 3d and it's kinda redundant to go after them. I'm betting a large portion of the RPG enthusiasts don't have "real" 3d yet. Oh, and I doubt we'll see a D3D patch right away because this is something 3dfx has had an "active" hand in. I'm sure they wouldn't spend all that time and money without some sort of assurance that they have a unique advantage.

As for killer app, it has to require significant additional horsepower to warrant upgrading to 3dfx product

Not really. The Diablo II thing is a perfect example. It won't require extra power but it does require 3dfx to play the game in all it's glory.

Unfortunately, I see the business model shifting from profitable retail to less profitable, higher quantity sales.

I agree. The upgrade market has far less potential than it once did, which is why 3dfx has to adopt this new business model. They must adapt or die. Yes, I remember when Porsche lowered their prices and started selling to the average consumer. That was about the same time the company returned to profitability. If 3dfx wants to make it long term they're going to have to sell a boxter or two.
