Actually to fit the revival script, one must confess, cry a lot, and then approach the leader . At this point they must agree to come under the thumb of the the leader once more. You aren't allowed to confess in more than one revival in a row (unless it travels between towns) lest the audience become jaded.

The trouble for Livingston is that it was not clear who was the leader. Under the cloud the republicans have raised, Henry Hyde is the nominal leader since the only business they have is to impeach and he is the chief prosecutor. As potential speaker, Livingston could not place himself under the thumb of Hyde, and without a thumb he had no roll in the revival, .... so he had to exit.
