I have been watching Ballard myself. I believe that fuel cells will be the power source that will replace the combustion engine. However I don't see this happening with in my life time. Fuel cells using PEM (proton exchange membrane) are efficient, safe and easy to manufacture, however the cost are too high. Direct hydrogen vehicle are the least expensive but hydrogen is not a common fuel, and the infrastructure does not exist for wide spread distribution. The re-former based systems using readily available fuel (methanol) adds to the complexity of the system and subsequent cost. Fuel cells faces the same obstacles as conventional battery powered vehicles. Both are expensive and do not allow the same freedom and mobility that is needed to compete with the combustion engine.

I see AENG's OX2 engine as a interim step between the standard combustion engine and electric vehicles of the future. I will be the first to admit that AENG faces challenges but they are small in magnitude compared to those faced by Ballard and the fuel cell industry. The biggest advantage for AENG's technology is that it is profitable for companies to use it. I think this will be proven in the 1st quarter of 1999.
Of course this is just my opinion.

With all that said, let me close by wishing you and other participant on this thread a MERRY CHRISTMAS

SO YOU AGREE THE FUEL CELL ISNT THE ANSWER
The fuel cell isnt the answer, and never will be, and the electric car is the answer for the todays promblems. DONT THINK SO
Too expensive, Cant drive far enough with out recharging. THE OX2 IS THE ANSWER, More power, less pollution, less parts, cheaper to produce
YOUR MISSING THE WHOLE POINT AURIC

Nissan sets price for new electric compact van

CARSON, Calif., Dec 18 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said on Friday it set the price for its Altra EV electric compact van at $50,999, including delivery charges.

The price incorporates a $5,000 buy-down incentive from participating air quality management districts, the No. 2 Japanese automaker said. The cost under a three-year lease, including unlimited mileage, is $599 a month and includes a bumper-to-bumper warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance.

The vehicles will be available to select fleet customers, including utilities and municipal departments, and Nissan employees. Retail availability for the general public will be announced at a later date.

Altra EV, manufactured on an all-new platform at Nissan's Tochigi, Japan, assembly plant, is the first production electric vehicle in the United States to use a Lithium-ion battery. Such batteries offer a greater energy charge with a lighter battery pack.

The vehicle has a driving range of 80 to 100 miles and takes five hours to recharge completely.
