Gee, Tokyo,
Beyond that aggressive daytrader exterior, lies an inner soft-sided, compassionate side that is very humane and apropo this time of year..

It is warm in Wash DC as well, and I am sure there will be lots of people here who will be reflecting, and introspecting during this holiday season...

Regards and happy holidays to you,
Terri

RE: Gifting appreciated securities

If anyone is unfamiliar with this technique, please consider the following:
1) You ask stocks that have appreciated LONG term. You have to pay tax of 20-35% on gain so their value to you may be as little as 60-80% of their face value if you sell.
2) Have your broker transfer them to your favorite charity's account, (you must give them the broker and account number).
3) You deduct full face value from your taxes, and the charity sells them for full face value.
4) Your deduction is at your max short term earnings rate, as high as 50% with state tax, and should survive the AMT calculation.

A max case example:

10,000 of stock, with nominal cost, long term gain, donated.
Cost to you is after tax value,6500., say 65%, (AMT plus state tax total of 35%)
Value of deduction to you = 5000.
Your actual, out of pocket cost = 1500.

10,000 to your charity for 1500.

Call your tax preparer as there are limitations. No long term gains?, then buy 1500. of Jan'00 leaps on CISCO, IBM, or whomever and give them away in 12 months and 1 day,

Peace.

Happy Holidays to you Joe. While you have sixty degrees in
Manhattan, its snowing in Northern CA and i might be stuck
at a relatives house because the mountain road I drive home
is having a blizzard! LOL.

I hope everybody has a happy and safe holiday season.
