San Diego Union Trib take on the release was rather positive:
"The consortium of companies, which includes Japan's NTT Mobile
Communications Networks and [ British Telecommunications plc ] , agreed to discuss altering their operating systems to accommodate a convergence of Qualcomm's and Ericsson's latest technologies -- which are currently incompatible."

I had not quite picked that up before, but that is very positive IMHO. The non-cdma carriers have to change their systems anyway; aren't they really say they are amenable to changing their systems to accommodate an IS-95 compatible 3g standard?
