>>> They could certainly call it MSFT open Unix, or something, I don't know. I agree that they could sell it, but that would almost be admitting that NT doesn't cut it. There's also a lot of people using Linux because they dislike the philosophy of MSFT so much, and coopting Linux would only exacerbate this feeling, don't you think? <<<

This is all true. But I think they will have to do it or continue to lose server market share dramatically, which of course could be their choice if they get stubborn about NT.

I think they could only coopt Linux to an extent - probably a minority market share. But they could keep selling NT for quite a while, and the total server market share retained could be significant. I actually think they could do some good things, particularly in the ease of installation of Linux, which could definitely use some work.

I think no matter how you look at it they are going to get hurt some, especially in market share terms. They are too high in market share for there not to be a fall. And lots of folks want them to get hurt, which tends to make it happen. Plus, they always created some of their share through activities which the government is now restraining to some extent. Also, all these embedded systems and set top units naturally open up the market anyway. Linux is not the only new competitor, and linux to some extent legitimizes BE and whatnot.

It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood...
