I'd not heard of either Huber or Corvis until this story, however...

I did a patent database lookup and found that he was granted a patent
recently (20oct98) for "Optical demultiplexers with grating
reflectors" (#5,825,520). On other patents, he was one of a team of
inventors, and the team's patents are assigned to Ciena. This last
patent is invented by him alone, and is not assigned to anyone.
Thus it's likely that Corvis will be his way of bringing it to light.

Unfortunately, I don't completely comprehend the patent's significance.
Can anyone translate the "patentese" into English and/or why it's
significant?

As for my proximity to Corvis, Columbia is a suburb of Baltimore on
the opposite side of the city from me.
