Clark;

Qualcomm's view of how the next generation CDMA standard should be implemented is good. I think what is happening (or not happening; depending if you are Ericsson or not) is the fact that Ericsson was caught with their pants down regarding CDMA.

A lot of criticism how Ericsson handled the recent interim report and how Nokia is eating them alive is adding gas to the fire. At the same time the industry is calling for a decision of which standard to go with.

Seems to me Ericsson is trying to buy time wanting to tweak the proposed standard Qualcomm presented.

As the inventor of commercial CDMA Qualcomm naturally wants to cash in and therefore pushes hard to keep their standard intact. Ericsson is pushing for a market standardization (VHS vs Beta) hoping they can convince the industry that the standard with the most market share is the best even though the technology itself might be inferior. This will result in continued legal battles and lobbying of relevant industry bodies churning along without making a decision what standard to go with.

I think I'm not the only one that is frustrated with all this back and forth talk without no real action. If Ericsson wants to continue be involved as a major player in the wireless industry it is necessary for them to grow up and get to work.

Both Ericsson and Qualcomm has to realize that the power of an open standard (a converged standard both parties agree upon) only will help in the long run. Who's is getting greedy here? With Motorola half way out (now gaining market share again) Ericsson and Qualcomm had a great opportunity to capitalize upon the situation. Nokia is quitely churning along in the background eating away market share....

Decisions, decisions...
