Barr Labs Challenges Ortho Pharma Contraceptive Patents Dow Jones Newswires POMONA, N.Y. -- Barr Laboratories Inc. (BRL) challenged the patents protecting Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp.'s Ortho-Novum 7/7/7 oral contraceptive. Ortho Pharmaceutical is a unit of Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). In a press release Monday, Barr said it filed an abbreviated new drug application for the oral contraceptives, which include three different tablet combinations of norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol in October with the Food and Drug Administration. Barr received FDA approval for the application in November and notified Ortho Pharmaceutical, which filed suit against the company in Federal District Court in New Jersey. Ortho-Novum 7/7/7 is a regimen of oral contraceptives that includes three different tablet combinations of norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol. Barr makes and markets pharmaceuticals.
