Elwood: I was thinking about IBM just today. I would be concerned that it has gone so high in such a short-time. But splits might be worth a premium. John is an ex-IBM man, perhaps he will comment.

BTW CMPL must be near its nominal offering price by now - and lagging even on an up day for the internet stocks. Maybe a buying opportunity for a bullish post-Christmas shopping report. (Then again, technical manuals are hardly Christmas gift material).

Hello Elwood,

I would expect that IBM might split fairly soon, especially due to the fact that their float is not all that huge. They have been buying back loads of stock over the years, and last time I checked the float was under a billion shares, substantially less than CPQ and Dell. In retrospect the dollars IBM spent to put that stock in the treasury over the years has turned out to be money very well spent for them and the shareholders.
