<<This high approval rating is what I simply don't understand. Where is it coming from? Certainly not from my circle of acquaintances, which I consider to be pretty mainstream.>>

Perhaps regional differences could account for it. Where I live and work, opinions seem to be even more favorable to the President than the polls indicate.

<<Are investors totally out of synch with the great majority of Americans, or are the surveys flawed?>>

I think it's a safe bet that investors statistically tend toward the conservative side. As for the surveys being flawed, bear in mind that they were apparently confirmed by the fact that the Republicans lost seats in the recent election, when they were expecting to gain seats.

In any case, the market certainly doesn't seem to be worried about the outcome. I think Bob is right in saying that investors don't think that a President Gore will affect the markets one way or the other.

Bob,

I don't get it either. I think surveys are flawed. I just hope that Mr. Market doesn't decide to get depressed over the trial. That would not be fun for the portfolio.

I wonder how many of the people polled actually vote. HA!

This high approval rating is what I simply don't understand. Where is it coming from? Certainly not from my
circle of acquaintances, which I consider to be pretty mainstream. And apparently not from Brinkerheads either,
at least not from those who called the show this weekend and voiced an opinion. Are investors totally out of
synch with the great majority of Americans, or are the surveys flawed? >>>>>

Yes, in general investors especially those who regularly spend most of their weekend listening to a business show are an extreme demographically. I would assume we are talking on average higher wage earners and especially when you add the issue of who spends their time posting to this type of thread and thus are high users of the internet you are now talking about an overwhelmingly male group almost all above lower middle class and not a strongly Democratic bunch by a long shot and it tends to be the group that dislikes or despises Clinton the most even well before Monica. As far as callers to the show go besides these demographic factors don't forget that Brinker has often indicated strong dislike of Clinton without necessarily overtly saying it and fans of Bob are more likely just to avoid the issue and stick to financial things while those who dislike Clinton feel free to express their disapproval. As an extreme example I think it would be obvious folly to say Clinton's extraordinary poll numbers must be wrong based on listening to callers to Rush or Gordon Liddy. I also think Richard's point is important in that when I hear people from more liberal areas like parts of the Northeast I hear comments about Ken Starr being a sex obsessed pornographer and anger about what's been done to Clinton rather than what Clinton has done, while in more conservative places the outrage tends to be more directed at Clinton
