Richie,
It is also an excellent move for a shareholder. It gives him time to get out and maybe continue to make a profit from the stock's demise. That or just hang on to the stock with the puts covering the loss for a period of time.

MARKET NEWS: U.S. stocks vaulted higher on Monday as the
seasonal Santa Claus rally visited Wall Street in the wake of the
impeachment of President Bill Clinton and the end of the military
conflict in Iraq. The Dow posted a gain of 85 points, or 1%, to a
close of 8989, after spending nearly the entire session well above
the 9,000 level. The Nasdaq surged 52 points, or 2.5%, to a record
2138, fueled by surging Internet and biotechnology shares. In the
broader market, advancing issues outpaced declines by a roughly
4-3 margin on active New York Stock Exchange volume of more than
740 million shares. The S&P 500 gained 14.81 points to 1202.84, a
new high. The 30-year Treasury was off 29/32 to yield 5.06%. For
