I hope this helps:
GSM was introduced in Germany and some Scandinavian countries in early/mid-1992, and Germany was the big growth engine for the first
two years or so. I am not in my office, so I can't give you the exact timeline, but it took GSM longer to reach 20 mln subs from first
commercial launch than it has taken CDMA to reach 20 mln. However, digital phones were something new to consumers six years ago - not
so by the time CDMA went commercial. Hence, I would have to say that CDMA is pretty much following the growth chart of GSM with a
lag of 3 years or so. You are also absoultely correct that the growth rate is what matters to QCOM, as revenue and earnings growth correlate
with subs growth - not the absolute number of subs.
