December 22, 1998 09:44 AM

HERNDON, Va., Dec 22 (Reuters) - Internet service provider PSINet Inc. on Tuesday said it had bought fiber optic strands in the San Francisco area from Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (MFNX) for an undisclosed sum.

The company said the strands, which loop around the San Franscisco Bay area, will be able to support services in several cities along its route.

This is PSINet's sixth acquisition of fiber optic capacity. The companny will activate in 2000 these strands, which are expected to last for the expected 20-year useful life of the fiber.

PSINet also said it closed on acquisitions of three Hong Kong Internet companies -- SpiderNet, HugeNet, and AsiaNet -- for an undisclosed sum. These purchases bolster PSINet's presence in the Asia-Pacific region and reinforce PSINet's position as the leading commercial Internet service provider in Hong Kong, it said.
