China has granted a partial reprieve for foreign companies
involved in Chinese telecom ventures that may allow them
to continue operating, said the U.K.'s Financial Times
quoting unnamed officials. The companies, investing in
Chinese telecoms through the so-called
"china-china-foreign" arrangement, might escape the
"clean-up" of foreign participation promised by the
government, said the report.

The Chinese telecoms officials said that "a few" of the 46
existing or planned telecoms ventures would not be allowed
because of regulation infringements. The remainder may
have to undergo contract adjustments, said the report.

Officials told the newspaper that the CDMA mobile venture
between Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecom and China
Unicom, the second state carrier, as well as ventures by
U.S.-based Metromedia were in danger of being cancelled.
However the high profile deal between Unicom, the U.S.'s
Sprint and Japan's Sumitomo may be allowed to continue in
a modified form, said the officials in the report.
