I probably wouldn't open a new position at this level right now. I sold half my shares yesterday and I have a stop loss order in for the rest in the event of a pullback.

But that's mostly because I have an established profit which I don't want to lose. Fundamentals haven't changed. Just a question of what the next investor, trader or greater fool is willing to pay today.

Are some internet stocks ahead of themselves? yes
Can anyone really say why or why not at this point? maybe

Obviously it is an area of great growth from 5M people in '95 to 80+M in '98. Money will be made and thankfully we live in a capitalist based country that allows large sums of money to flow into these new companies. Let these companies buy sell merge and push the envelope to the max. Yes there will be a shakeout eventually and ten years from now it will be clear who the winners were and why.

Looking at the Mary Meeker article in Barrons she mentions that "the entire Internet sector, excluding America Online, totals below $90 billion. That's less than the market value of a good-sized drug company like Eli Lilly." Looking to the future, the "potential" of the internet in a gestalt kind of way ref. the Eli Lilly analogy makes me think that as a sector perhaps the internet is not overvalued relative to older line companies. We pretty much know that the drug stocks, KO, GE and so and so forth will grow at 20% and in some cases in the single digits. We have clearly seen sustained 40%+ odd growth in companies like MSFT, DELL, CSCO, EMC and many others for quite some period of time. Today, it looks like the Internet sector is in a period of hypergrowth <duh ;-)> that may eclipse what was seen with the computer and software stocks when they were cranking up 15-20 years ago.

I think it fair to say that Demand for these internet stocks is clearly outstripping Supply at this point. I would highly recommend that you read Ms. Meekers take on the net stocks in the 21 Dec Barrons.
